Lab Introduction: Plant Ecology Lab

Current research projects and related works in the lab are summarized as follows:

1. Forest Dynamics Plots Long-term permanent plot studies are used to examine forest structure, composition, spatial patterns, phenology and dynamics of subtropical rain forests in Taiwan. The study sites are the 6-ha Nanjenshan and 25-ha Fushan Forest Dynamics Plots.

2. Vegetation mapping and classification of Taiwan The research is being performed in collaboration with scientists from other six universities. The resulting vegetation maps and associated information will support a wide variety of resource assessment, ecosystem management, and planning concerns. Steps toward the implementation of the mapping program include: Nation-wide field surveys (using plot method); review and analyses of references, published and unpublished data sets; delineation of boundaries of vegetation units on aerial photos; development of a standardized national vegetation classification system; and production of vegetation maps at a scale of 1:5,000.

3. Digitization of collections at the TAI Herbarium As a part of the National Digital Archives Program, the TAI sub-project will digitize all botanical collections in the herbarium. Information for approx. 150,000 images of specimens, including 1,000 types, and specimen data, will be available to anyone with internet access. The Flora of Taiwan (edited between 1993 and 2003) includes descriptions of nearly 4,000 species and contains 5,290 pages of text, 2,111 illustrations and 1190 photos. The project also aims to digitize and make this work available on the internet in an interoperable and integrated manner (Plants of TAIWAN)
