In 2003 the Institute of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology (IEEB) was established in response to a growing demand for knowledge in the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity. The aims of IEEB are to provide the highest quality graduate education and to conduct world-class research in ecology and evolutionary biology.
Currently there are 21 faculty members and approximately 85 graduate students and post doctorates in IEEB. In addition, other faculty members of NTU with related interest are also invited to join force with IEEB to promote teaching and research in integrative ecology and evolutionary biology. Although IEEB's offices and laboratories are located in the Life Science Building at NTU, field research often takes IEEB's faculty and students to various parts of Taiwan. The research interests of IEEB's faculty range from genes to ecosystems, which include chemical and physiological ecology, population and community ecology, animal behavior, landscape ecology and remote sensing, applied ecology, molecular evolution, population genetics, plant structures and functions, systematics, biogeography and phylogeny, etc. There is a great deal of interaction and collaboration among faculty members within IEEB and with members of other research institutions.
IEEB's graduate program is designed to equip graduates with knowledge as well as analytical ability that will enable them to respond to future advances in the field of ecology and evolutionary biology. Students of IEEB are guided in taking a comprehensive but flexible curriculum that is designed to meet his or her interest and goals. There are only a few formal course requirements and independent research begins early.
IEEB offers both M.S. and Ph.D. Programs. The wide variety of research interests and strengths of IEEB faculty members in ecology and evolutionary biology helps IEEB students easily find research advisors who match their research interests and can provide the necessary training to meet study goals. Graduate students also have excellent opportunities to experience an environment that promotes innovative and interdisciplinary research.
Biodiversity issues are at the forefront of concerns for our society and IEEB is devoted to promote an understanding and application of the ecological and evolutionary principles in various biodiversity issues. IEEB will take an interdisciplinary approach and an international perspective to teaching, research, and public service.
