Lab Introduction: Plant Systematics and Evolution Lab

Our lab has been working on subjects related to plant systematics and evolution, from different perspectives like taxonomy, reproductive ecology, and molecular evolution. We are also interested in floristics of East Asia for the species distribution patterns. Another line of research is on the plant survey history in Taiwan, particularly during Taihoku Imperial University period.

(1) Plant systematics and evolution

The materials studied in our lab including Balanophora (Balanophoraceae), Elatostema (Urticaceae), Mussaenda (Rubiaceae), Millettieae (Fabaceae), Rubus (Rosaceae), and Ardisia (Myrsinaceae). Most of the projects also involve other related studies, such as reproductive ecology or molecular evolution. The work on Balanophora including the systematics (Su et al. 2012; Su et al. 2015) and the plastome evolution (Su et al. 2019). We published a revision of ELatostema in Taiwan (Tseng & Hu 2015) and a new hybrid of Elatostema (Tseng & Hu 2014), a phylogenetic study was just out as well (Tseng et al. 2019).

(2) Plant reproductive system

There are quite diverse patterns of reproductive systems in plants. We are particular interested in the sex expression systems of plants, such as evolution of dioecy and agamospermy. We use the data from the flora of Taiwan and examined the sex expression patterns. The results showed that the dioecy percentage is quite high in Taiwan, particularly in the subtropical forests (Tseng et al. 2008). We also examine the sex expression systems in various of plants, e.g. Symplocos wikstroemiifolia (Wang & Hu 2011), Balanophora japonica and Balanophora yakushimensis (Su & Hu 2012). The former is a cryptic dioecious species, while the later two are agamospermic taxa.

(3) Molecular evolution

We have studied several non-photosynthetic plants, including Balanophora and Mitrastema, for the plastome evolution and functions. Both of the plastomes are very small, around 16kb, and have unusual genomic features (Su et al. 2019). Other collaborations included the plastome study of Ardisia polysticta (Ku et al. 2013) and the plastome of Schoepfia jasminodora (Su & Hu 2016).

(4) Plant distribution pattern and floristic study

The distribution pattern of plants was shaped by biological and non-biological factors, as well as the evolutionary history of the flora. We are using the data compiled from the herbarium specimen records and the data from plant survey in Taiwan, hoping to elucidate the pattern and the mechanisms underneath. We hope to compare the data with neighbor regions as well.

(5) Plant survey history in Taiwan

We are particularly interested in the period of Taihoku Imperial University, for the botanical studies, not only within Taiwan, but also in the Southeast Asia and Micronesia. There are more than 100000 specimens deposited in TAI herbarium collected during this period, and many are still waited to be studied.

(6) Ethnobotany

We have been collaborated with Dr. Su-Mei Lo from the Department of Anthropology, NTU, for the home garden of Amis tribe at Atolan, Taitung.
