Lab Introduction: Laboratory of Palynology

  1. Pollen Morphology: We have collected pollen specimen for over twenty years. After acetolysis, the pollen morphology will be studied under LM and SEM. It is the basic data for study of taxonomy, evolution and pollen identification.
  2. Pollen Germination: Study of pollen viability and germination under ozone stress.
  3. Floral and Pollen Development: Study of floral development, microsporogenesis, and pollen development by using LM, SEM, TEM and histochemistry. We focus now on male sterility and organelles evolution in some gymnospermous and angiospermous taxa.
  4. Aeropalynology: A Burkard seven-day volumetric pollen trap is used to collect airborne pollen in some study sites, such as Yangmingshan National Park and Kinmen Island. The pollen calendar from each locality is constructed to illustrate the seasonal variation in the quantitative and qualitative characteristics of airborne. These data can be used for further studies of pollen allergy and pollen analysis (paleoecology).
  5. Melitopalynology: The species and density of pollen in honey is used as a criterion to identify true honey, as well as its source of product. In addition, we develop a method, using flavonoids as indicator chemical, to successfully differentiate the Taiwanese Longang honey from those made in Thailand.
  6. Vegetation History and Paleoclimatic Change: We have performed some pollen analysis from lake sediments, such as Duck Pond in Yangmingshan National Park, Yuenyang Lake in Hsinchu and Mystery Lake in Ilan. Combined with 14C-dating, the vegetation history, human activity and climatic change in the past can be reconstructed.
